This course offers an introduction to and discussion of research on contemporary and traditional sex roles, male and female stereotypes, sexual discrimination, and human rights.  Students will examine the social and political issues that affect human experience in relation to biological sex differences, as well as the feminine and masculine roles within various communities.  Through reading a diversity of texts, discussions in class, and examination of our own cultural productions, students should come to understand what they had considered free-choice decisions regarding gender are most often predictable cultural constructions.  Additionally, students will learn how these social constructions are historically contextualized, and that—in a culturally diverse and rapidly developing capitalist society—these popular constructions can help explain discrimination and cultural and social struggle. We also explore different “body strategies” that allow us to understand different definitions of sex.
