Cultivate Critical Consciousness

About me

I am a committed feminist educator, in particular at the college level. My dream is to bring college-level discourse to an open audience, illustrating discussions that have happened in my college courses in Women’s and Ethnic Studies, as well as in Intro to Philosophy and other cultural studies courses. I have been fortunate to teach at various higher education institutions. I love teaching the world of Ideas and sharing some of the brightest scholars’ work by interacting with it. I love nurturing students the most.

Dr. Charla Ogaz

The three courses I am currently building are ones I have taught at the university level: "Sex and Gender," "Sexualities," and "Critical Race Theory through Multiracial Identities." “Sex and Gender” will add to the current debates around gender identities and cultural resistance against binary systems. My short course helps to define the terms and illuminate some of the differences in various sex and gender identities. This course is directed to beginners, so to speak; to folks who want to understand the terms and some of the histories of these trans- and other gender identities. I hope to empower you to join the debate as a more-informed civic and cultural participant.

Building upon the mini-course, "Sex and Gender," I offer another short course on "Sexualities." This course is a glimpse into contested sexuality identities and practices, largely from a feminist perspective. We will examine various cultural expressions of human sexuality and the rise of multiple emergent public identities. We will consider debates around Sexuality that emerged in the Second and Third Waves of Feminism, as well as what some are considering the Fourth Wave, including #metoo’s expression of “coming to voice” after social repression through our contemporary culture of sexual violence.

My other course, “Critical Race Theory through Multiracial Identities,” will add to the current (popular) "culture war" debates around Critical Race Theory [CRT] and the (il)legitimacy of teaching histories of oppression. From the perspective of critical discourse on (multi)racial identities, I offer information and discussion on how to negotiate and participate in this debate as well, deconstructing “race” itself in the meantime by showing its historical, cultural, and always shifting constructions.
