This course offers an introduction to and discussion of research on contemporary and traditional sex roles, male and female stereotypes, sex discrimination and human rights.

Students will examine the cultural, social, and political issues that affect human experience in relation to biological sex differences and feminine and masculine roles within various communities.

Through reading a diversity of texts, discussions in class, and examination of our own cultural productions, students will come to understand that what they had considered free-choice decisions regarding gender are most often predictable cultural constructions— social constructions that are historically contextualized and politically exploited.
